Perfect placement for Leis, Mums, and Sashes.
Because our Spirit Cutouts are handmade from high-quality cardstock, using the right adhesive is the key to a professional-looking finish. Here is how to attach them securely without damaging the cutout or your ribbon.
1. The Best Adhesive: Hot Glue
For both Graduation Leis and Homecoming Mums, we highly recommend using a Hot Glue Gun.
- Why? It dries instantly and creates a strong, permanent bond with satin ribbon and braid.
-
Tip: Use a "Low Temp" or dual-temp glue gun if possible. High-heat glue can sometimes melt delicate satin ribbons or burn your fingers!
2. What to Avoid: Liquid Craft Glue
Do NOT use wet glues like white school glue, tacky glue, or fabric paint to attach these cutouts.
- Why? Since the cutouts are made of cardstock, the moisture in liquid glue will cause the paper layers to warp, bubble, or peel apart as they dry.
3. Step-by-Step for Graduation Leis
- Plan it out: Lay your braided lei flat on a table. Place your letters (e.g., NAME or YEAR) on top of the braid to check the spacing.
- Glue: Apply a small, pea-sized dot of hot glue to the back center of the cutout.
- Press: Firmly press the cutout onto the high point of the braid weave. Hold for 5–10 seconds.
- Check: Ensure the letter is straight before the glue cools completely.
4. Step-by-Step for Mums & Garters
- Streamers: Apply a vertical line of hot glue down the center back of the cutout and press onto the ribbon streamer.
- Centerpiece: For the Mum Head, apply glue liberally to the back of the cutout and press firmly into the flower or mum backing.
5. The "Temporary" Method: Safety Pins
If you want to be able to remove the letters later (for example, on a graduation sash you want to reuse), you can carefully tape a small safety pin to the back of the cardstock cutout and pin it to the fabric.
